Dolko, a young barbarian warrior born in Germania, on the borders of the Empire, is taken prisoner by the Roman legions and offered as a gift to General Marcus Augustus.
He becomes his slave, and must comply with his master's wishes, including in bed, and follow him in his military campaigns. But, the day after a bitter defeat, Marcus Augustus is forced to commit suicide.
All his possessions are sold, and Dolko is assigned to the house of a rich merchant who makes him the servant of his children as well as of his nephew, Quintilius, a young and charming debauchee who will become his lover and will introduce him to the orgies of the Roman good society. However, following a tragic accident, the young man is forced to flee the pleasures of Rome. He then embarks for Greece without suspecting that once again fate will play tricks on him and lead him into unexpected adventures, sometimes sensual, often cruel, but which will never shake his conviction of being a free man.
